Maya L.
she/her
Maya started caring for animals when she was a fairly young kid, as she very much preferred their company over many of the humans around, and she credits her volunteer work at an animal shelter as what helped get her through high school. At 21 she ventured out on her own to live and work at a wildlife rehabilitation center in the Ecuadorian rainforest, and later that year she moved to Portland to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.
Since that move in 2011, she has worked in every department of a general practice clinic, building a love for patient care, client education, cat health, and behavior.
In August 2019, Maya joined Brooklyn Yard Veterinary Hospital looking to deepen her knowledge and expand her skills in veterinary medicine. Connecting quickly to the philosophy of the clinic and the supportive (and fun) work environment that Dr. Phelps has created, she eagerly took on as much as she could. With a passion for personalized veterinary medicine, an involved and compassionate patient/client experience, and continued education and training for all staff, she moved into a management role in early 2022.
Outside of work, Maya spends her time volunteering with multiple non-profits in the area: Portland Animal Welfare Team, First Nations Vet, One Tail At A Time, and Stumptown Strays. She is also an active member of the Oregon Veterinary Technician and Assistant Association (OVTAA), so she spends pretty much all of her time with animals or animal people. Which is exactly how she wants it.
Maya also enjoys riding dirt bikes, working in the garden, listening to podcasts, reading corny thriller or mystery novels, and petting any cat she can. She lives in the neighborhood with her husband, their two cats, Penguin and Fry, and a rotation of foster dogs.
