Maya began her veterinary medicine career in 2011 after spending time in Ecuador, living and working at a wildlife rehabilitation center in the rainforest. That year, she moved to Portland and secured a job at a general practice clinic, where for 8 years she worked in every department, from reception to surgery.

In August 2019, Maya joined Brooklyn Yard Veterinary Hospital, where she quickly connected with the clinic's philosophy and the supportive (and fun) work environment that Dr. Phelps has created. In the years that followed, Maya joined the upper management team, working with Dr. Phelps to open Spruce Veterinary Urgent Care in the summer of 2025.

Maya is involved with multiple non-profit animal welfare organizations in the Portland area and is very passionate about expanding access to veterinary care for underserved and marginalized communities. She is a board member for Good Bones Alliance and a volunteer with First Nations Vet and Portland Animal Welfare Team. 

Dedicated to client education and staff development, Maya has helped build and continues to strengthen our intricate protocols surrounding patient care, staff skill training, and resources, and functions as a foundational support system for everyone at Brooklyn Yard. 

Maya manages all of our community partners and is always looking for new ways to get both Brooklyn Yard and Spruce Vet involved in events or volunteer opportunities!
