Positive Reinforcement Training

Positive reinforcement training is the gold standard of training and is backed by scientific research. Positive reinforcement teaching techniques use non-confrontational methods to work a dog’s brain – rewarding positive behavior, establishing rituals and training actions that are incompatible with negative behavior, and lessening a dog’s frustration. Decision-making is influenced without the use of force and the dog’s trust in the owner is not violated through threatening treatment. This is the only type of training that we recommend at Brooklyn Yard Veterinary Hospital. We abide by the position statement from the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior regarding the use of punishment for behavior modification and strongly discourage the use of aversive training techniques and devices.

Certification is not a requirement for dog trainers, but we encourage clients to look at the credentials of a selected trainer to ensure that the methods they utilize are humane and science-based. Below are some credentials that you may see that indicate a professional is maintaining continuing education:

Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT), International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC)Association of Animal Behavior Professionals (AABP), Certified Behavior Adjustment Training Instructor (CBATI), International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP), National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors (NADOI), Karen Pryor Academy

Additionally, here are some important points to consider when choosing a trainer.

Below is an evolving list of trainers and training/pet care companies in the Portland area that utilize techniques and methods backed by science.
